Situated at the bustling Illawarra Road in Marrickville, Bánh Cuōn Bà Oanh is an authentic Vietnamese eatery that brings the flavours of Northern Vietnam right to Sydney’s doorstep. Known for its delicate, freshly steamed rice noodle rolls (bánh cuōn), this small, vibrant spot is often packed— and for good reason. It’s a true slice of Vietnam, offering not just meals but an experience.
Owned and managed by Ba Oanh and her family, Bánh Cuōn Bà Oanh brought one of Hanoi’s classic street food, the silky rice noodles made with house-fermented rice batter. It has an open kitchen where people can see the meticulous steaming process, while also adding a warm and welcoming atmosphere to the place. Its authentic flavours draw Vietnamese patrons as well as curious foodies alike.
LOCATION
Bánh Cuōn Bà Oanh is located just a few meters from Marrickville station, specifically at 343 Illawarra Road.
It’s open Tuesdays-Wednesdays, Fridays-Sundays from 9:00 AM – 5:30 PM.
WHAT TO ORDER
Banh Cuon ($15)
Steamed rice noodle rolls, with your choice of meat or vegetables, topped with crispy fried shallots, and served with tangy nuoc cham (fish sauce) for dipping. I’d say it’s a must-try, but you be the judge.
You can have this with steamed pork, fried cinnamon pork, fried green rice pork, grilled pork, chicken or beef rolls.
Sticky Rice Combos ($15)
Yellow sticky rice with your choice of meat. You can have it with braised pork and pork floss, chicken, fried cinnamon pork, or just plain sticky rice. I’m a sucker for sticky rice but I wasn’t quite impressed with this one. Maybe because I was expecting the meat to be more tender.
Congee ($15)
A comforting bowl of rice porridge with either pork, chicken or prawn. Definitely perfect for a chilly day. I personally wasn’t able to try this one but I’ve seen lots of positive comments about it.
Drinks (Coffee in particular)
I was curious to try their Vietnamese coconut coffee. I usually prefer a simple long black coffee but this definitely is worth exploring if you don’t mind trying something new. They also have Durian coffee, if I remember correctly, as well as the classic Vietnamese coffee options. If you prefer your coffee sweet, then give Vietnamese coffee a try.

WHY VISIT?
It’s not just about the food—it’s also the vibe that draws people in. The tiny space buzzes with chatter and steam, creating an atmosphere reminiscent of Vietnam’s street food scene. While the seating can feel snug, it only adds to the charm.
Whether you’re a fan of authentic Vietnamese dishes (I know I am!) or simply keen for a foodie adventure in Sydney, Bánh Cuōn Bà Oanh is a spot worth waiting in line for. Come hungry and be prepared to leave happy!
