You already know this matters to me. It has been part of my routine before creating any itinerary to research about good food and coffee spots.

Scenic drives are great. Oysters are nice. But coffee changes the mood—it is essential!

Hobart’s specialty coffee scene is small, but strong. It’s intentional, community-driven, and surprisingly impressive for a city of its size. Most of the coffee spots we tried did not miss a beat, well, except for one.

We also wanted to try a few spots but they were closed when we visited. I guess that’s another reason to go back, ha!

If you’re particular about your coffee, especially if you’re into pour overs and clean long blacks, you might want to consider my coffee list.

Villino Coffee (Hobart CBD)

📍 Address: 30 Criterion St, Hobart TAS 7000
🕒 Open Hours: Monday-Friday, 7:30 AM – 4:30 PM, Saturday, 8:30 – 3:30 PM

They serve pour over, which automatically puts them on my list. But it’s a busy cafe, so if you want something manually brewed, you gotta have patience. Villino’s a lively cafe loved by its community, and their coffee? It’s pretty solid.

Wide Awake Specialty Coffee (North Hobart)

📍 Address: 271 Elizabeth St, North Hobart TAS 7000
🕒 Open Hours: Monday-Friday, 6 AM – 4 PM; Saturday-Sunday, 7 AM – 2 PM

This one is something I was looking forward to. It’s not super central, it’s a bit up north. The neighbourhood’s really pretty and the cafe is really cozy. I just love the vibe.

Of course, they also do pour over, that’s why they were on my list to begin with. My aussie friends are not very particular with their coffee but this coffee shop made a really good impression on them, they actually shared how they now understand what I mean by “good” coffee. Wide Awake is definitely on top of my list.

Shake Coffee Roasters (Moonah)

📍 Address: 85 Main Rd, Moonah TAS 7009
🕒 Open Hours: Monday-Friday 6:30 AM – 2 PM, Saturday-Sunday, 7 AM – 1 PM

While I really love Wide Awake, this cafe stole the show on our last day. We intentionally drove up north cos this cafe is located in Moonah and we had planned to visit nearby sites.

They serve pour over, which automatically earns points from me. The cup I had was clean yet balanced, exactly how I like my coffee. I also appreciate when baristas take time to explain the coffee, its origin, processing, and tasting notes. That matters to me.

Shake Coffee Roasters ended up being my personal favourite in Hobart.

Moonah Museum was supposed to be part of that visit, but it was closed. So it turned into a coffee-only stop. No time wasted there. If I had to choose one to return to first, it might be Shake Coffee Roasters.

SteamHouse Cafe (Kettering)

This was our pre-Bruny stop. Good solid coffee before catching the ferry. Nothing overly complex, but reliable and exactly what you need before a long day exploring.

Bear With Me (South Hobart)

This one just didn’t do it for me. Not terrible. Just not memorable compared to the others. Coffee is subjective though, so you might feel differently. You might still want to try it and decide for yourself.

Cafes We Missed (but are still on my list)

Because Australian cafes close early and life doesn’t always align, we missed a few spots, and that’s okay! Here are other cafes worth checking out:

  • Somewhere Coffee Bar

    📍 5/118 Elizabeth St, Hobart TAS 7000
    🕒 Mon, Thu–Fri 7:30 AM – 2 PM | Sat–Sun 9 AM – 2 PM

I always check open hours for places I want to visit, but I wasn’t updated on this one. It was supposed to be our first coffee stop, but it was closed due to some emergencies with the owner’s family. They needed to close the shop for several days (or weeks). So we never really had the chance to visit because they weren’t open the entire time we were there.

  • Lēoht

📍 46A Hampden Rd, Battery Point TAS 7004
    🕒 Daily 7:30 AM – 2:30 PM

This is more of a brunch place than a coffee spot. I’ve heard great news about this cafe. We never had the chance to visit because of our schedule. We already had coffee spots planned, so we just decided to grab a bite there instead of going somewhere else. Maybe next time.

  • Erda

    📍 167A Harrington St, Hobart TAS 7000
    🕒 Monday to Saturday, 8 AM – 2 PM

So many cafes, so little time. Erda was high on my list along with Lēoht. Both are good brunch spots. The space is very promising, very minimal and clean. If you love brunch, add this to your list. I definitely want to try this next time.

  • Pigeon Whole Bakers

    📍 32 Argyle St, Hobart TAS 7000
    🕒 Daily, Mon-Fri 7:30 AM – 3:00 PM, Sat-Sun 7:30 – 1 PM

I really wanted to visit Pigeon Whole Bakers. They’re well-known in Hobart for their baked goods primarily, but they also serve coffee. I’ve heard great things about their bread but we already tried Bruny Baker (and loved it), plus we had a tight coffee schedule, so we didn’t have time to drop by. If you’re someone who enjoys pairing good coffee with properly made pastries or bread, this might be worth adding to your list.

  • Zimmah Coffee

    📍 219B Murray St, Hobart TAS 7000
    🕒 Mon–Fri 8 AM – 3 PM

This was a backup coffee spot just in case the coffee spots on my list end up being closed. Always have backups, guys!

  • Agent Cooper

    📍 390A Main Rd, Glenorchy TAS 7010
    🕒 Mon–Fri 6 AM – 2 PM | Sat 7 AM – 12 PM

Another backup coffee spot, perfect especially if you’re staying further north. If this is closer to you, then you might want to check it out.

Hobart may not have the volume of Melbourne or Sydney, but it has intention. The cafes feel community-driven. The baristas care. And if you’re someone who appreciates a properly brewed long black or a well-executed pour over, you won’t struggle here.

And if given the chance and opportunity, I will absolutely go back. Because good coffee is enough reason to go.
